Wellpoint Water Testing Pretoria

5-Star Reviewed
Home › Wellpoint Water Testing

Wellpoint Water Testing Pretoria covers finding out what is actually in your groundwater before you irrigate with it, filter it, or plumb it into anything.

Shallow groundwater is not a known quantity. Two wellpoints a few hundred metres apart can produce noticeably different water, and what comes up on day one is not necessarily what comes up in year three.

Testing before specifying filtration saves buying treatment you do not need. Tell us the intended use.

What Gets Tested

ParameterWhy it matters
Electrical conductivity and total dissolved solidsThe salinity measure. High readings damage salt-sensitive plants and leave deposits on paving and walls.
Chloride and sodiumSpecific salinity indicators. Inland these point to natural mineralisation or to contamination rather than to seawater.
Iron and manganeseCause orange and black staining on paving, walls and pool surfaces, and foul filters, screens and drippers.
pHAffects nutrient availability for plants and corrosion of metal fittings.
HardnessCalcium and magnesium, which scale up irrigation equipment.
NitratesCommon in shallow groundwater near sewer infrastructure and fertilised ground. A health parameter, not an irrigation one.
Suspended solids and turbiditySand and fines that wear pump seals and block drip emitters.
Microbiological indicatorsOnly relevant where any human contact or potable use is contemplated.

Irrigation Suitability Versus Drinking Water

These are different questions with different tests. An irrigation-suitability screen looks at salinity, pH, iron and sediment, and answers whether the water will grow plants and survive contact with your equipment. It says nothing about whether the water is safe to drink.

Potable assessment means a full laboratory analysis against the SANS 241 national drinking water standard, covering microbiological, chemical and physical parameters. It costs considerably more and takes longer.

Untreated wellpoint water should not be assumed safe to drink. Shallow groundwater sits close to surface sources of contamination, and a clear, odourless sample tells you nothing about its microbiological or chemical safety. Only a laboratory analysis against SANS 241 can support a potable conclusion, and treatment is usually required even then.

Under the City of Tshwane's Water By-law, a groundwater system may not be interconnected with the municipal water installation.

When to Test

  1. After installation. Once the point has been pumped clear of drilling fines, so the sample reflects the formation rather than the installation.
  2. Before specifying filtration. Treatment should follow a result, not a guess. Iron removal equipment fitted for a problem that turns out to be sediment is expensive and useless.
  3. When something visibly changes. New staining, a metallic or sulphurous smell, cloudiness or a change in colour.
  4. When plants start suffering. Leaf tip burn and gradual decline in salt-sensitive plants often trace back to rising conductivity.
  5. Periodically thereafter. Readings drift with abstraction and with the season.
  6. At the end of the dry winter. A drawn-down water table concentrates dissolved minerals, so the worst-case reading comes in September, not after the summer rains.

How Sampling Works

The pump is run long enough to draw fresh formation water rather than water standing in the pipework. Samples go into clean containers appropriate to the parameters being tested, are kept cool, and reach the laboratory quickly, because some readings shift with time and temperature. Field measurements for pH, conductivity and temperature are often taken on site at the same time.

Field screen: pH, conductivity, iron indicationR250 – R650
Irrigation suitability analysisR450 – R1,200
Extended chemical analysis with metalsR900 – R2,500

These are indicative Pretoria market ranges, not a quotation. Wellpoint pricing moves with depth, ground conditions, access and the pump specified, so treat these as a budgeting starting point and compare written quotes on what each one actually includes.

Ask what happens if no usable water is struck, whether the pump, controller and electrical connection are in the price, and what the guarantee covers.

What Pretoria Groundwater Tends to Show

Three patterns come up repeatedly in Pretoria. Iron and manganese are common in the weathered and alluvial ground where wellpoints work, and are usually cosmetic rather than dangerous, but they stain paving and pool surfaces and clog drip emitters. Hardness is the Centurion signature: water drawn from the dolomite belt is typically high in calcium and magnesium and will scale fittings and leave deposits on leaves. Nitrate is the one to take seriously in older suburbs, where leaking sewers, historic septic systems and long-standing garden fertiliser use can push shallow groundwater above the drinking-water limit even though it is perfectly usable on a lawn.

Nitrates turn up in older, denser suburbs and near agricultural ground. None of this is predictable from an address, which is the entire argument for testing rather than assuming.

Test first, then decide on treatment. Broader system detail sits on Wellpoint Installation Pretoria.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drink wellpoint water?

Not unless a laboratory analysis against SANS 241 says the water meets the drinking water standard, and usually not without treatment even then. Shallow groundwater is drawn from close to the surface and can carry bacterial, nitrate or chemical contamination that is invisible in a clear sample.

What test do I need for garden irrigation?

An irrigation suitability analysis covering conductivity or total dissolved solids, pH, iron and suspended solids. That answers whether the water will harm plants or block equipment.

Why is my wellpoint water staining everything orange?

Dissolved iron oxidising when it meets air. It is common in Pretoria's weathered and alluvial ground, generally not a health issue at irrigation concentrations, and treatable with iron removal filtration once a test confirms the level.

My water smells of rotten eggs. What is that?

Usually hydrogen sulphide, produced by bacteria in low-oxygen groundwater. It is unpleasant rather than dangerous at typical levels, but it should be tested rather than assumed, and it often accompanies iron problems.

How often should wellpoint water be tested?

Once at installation, then whenever the water visibly or noticeably changes. Anyone relying on the water for sensitive planting benefits from a check every year or two, ideally at the end of winter when readings are at their worst.

Is wellpoint water safe for a swimming pool?

It is commonly used for top-ups, but iron and high salinity cause staining and scale, and elevated iron will discolour the water when chlorine is added. Test before you start filling.

Can water quality change over time?

Yes. Dissolved minerals concentrate as the water table drops through the dry winter, iron levels shift with abstraction, and nearby land use can affect nitrates. A result from five years ago is not a current description of your water.
